Child-raising

An increase in the percentage assessment of the old-age pension by a fixed sum of CZK 500 for each child raised by the insured person, known as the “child-raising”, has been granted and paid since January 2023. This increase for children raised by an insured person applies both to Czech old-age pensions awarded after 31 December 2022 and to old-age pensions already being paid.

For old-age pensions awarded in 2025, the child-raising amounts to CZK 503 for each child raised. For old-age pensions awarded after 2025, the child-raising amounts to CZK 500 for each child raised. The child-raising becomes part of the percentage assessment of the old-age pension. It does not matter whether the child was raised in the Czech Republic or abroad.

If a Czech old-age pension is granted under an international social security agreement or EU coordination regulations in an amount calculated according to the ratio of insurance periods completed in the Czech Republic to the total insurance periods (a so-called pro-rata pension), the child-raising is also granted in a proportionate amount corresponding to the same ratio used for the award of the pro-rata pension.

The child-raising is granted only for a child whom the parent or another person personally cared for over a period of at least ten years until the child reached adulthood. If this person (whether a woman or a man) assumed care of the child after the child’s eighth birthday, the condition is met if they personally cared for the child for at least five years up to adulthood. In the event of the child’s death after the age of five, the condition is fulfilled if the woman or man personally cared for the child from birth until the child’s death. The term “child” refers to a biological child, an adopted child, or a child taken into care replacing parental care.

Old-age pensions already being paid or awarded before the end of 2022

The increase in old-age pensions granted before 2023 by way of the child-raising for a raised child (or children) was applied automatically (without the need for an application) for women (based on the number of children taken into account when determining their retirement age at the time their pension was awarded). For men whose old-age pension was granted before 2023 and who provided the greatest extent of personal care for a child, the increase in their pension by way of the child-raising was applied further to an application. Such applications could be submitted up to 31 December 2024.

Details are available here in Czech.

Old-age pensions awarded after 31 December 2022 (women and men)

An application for the child-raising must be included as part of the application for the old-age pension. When the pension is increased for a raised child, only the care of the child named by the applicant as raised in their old-age pension application is taken into account. If this condition is not met, the child-raising is not granted
