Attendance allowance of self-employed persons

Attendance allowance is a sickness insurance benefit due to a caregiver who lives with the person being cared for in a household. The condition of a joint household does not apply in the case of nursing or care for a direct relative and a sibling of the insured person or nursing a spouse, registered partner, parents of a spouse or registered partner.

A self-employed person is entitled to attendance allowance if:

  • caring for a child under 10 years of age if the child becomes ill or suffers an injury, or
  • caring for another individual whose health condition due to illness or injury necessarily requires care by another individual, or of a woman who has given birth if her condition immediately after childbirth necessarily requires care by another individual, or
  • caring for a child under the age of 10, because the child cannot due to the ordered quarantine be in the care of a school or a special children's or other similar facility for children (hereinafter referred to as the "school") to whose daily or weekly care the child is otherwise subject, or attend school, or
  • caring for a child under 10 years of age because the individual who otherwise cares for the child has fallen ill, suffered an injury or other circumstances have occurred pursuant to Section 57(1)(b) or (c) of the  Sickness Insurance Act, has given birth or has been ordered into quarantine and is therefore unable to care for the child.

The need for treatment or care is ruled on by the attending physician of the person who has fallen ill, by issuing a Decision on the Need for attendance (care) and sending it electronically to the CSSA.

The maximum period of attendance allowance is 9 days. The exception are those cases where the parent is a single parent. The person can draw attendance allowance for up to 16 days if they are caring for a child under the age of 16 who has not yet completed compulsory school attendance. Parents or other authorized persons may take over caring for the child once within the 9 (or 16) days.

General conditions applicable to employees also apply to self-employed persons and are the same as for long-term attendance benefits for self-employed persons.
