If a citizen applies for a disability pension, the disability shall be assessed in a so-called fact-finding medical examination. For a citizen with an already awarded disability pension, DSSA will then assess the disability (whether/how the health condition, capacity to work, or degree of disability, have changed) during the so-called control medical examination. According to the outcome of the control medical examination, the degree of disability may increase or decrease, or it may be noted that the reduced capacity to work no longer corresponds to the disability. The award of the disability pension (of any degree) may not therefore be permanent, as it depends on the development of the health condition, which is usually not stable. In many cases, changes may occur over time or as a result of treatment.

The disability pension beneficiaries (of all three degrees) may exploit their remaining working potential and work as they see fit. Their capacity to work is only limited by their adverse health condition, which means their entitlement to pension or pension payments will not be forfeited by their gainful activity.

Only the period when the disability pension for the third degree disability, which is the so-called period treated as the insurance period, shall be included in both the entitlement and the amount of the future old-age pension. The period when the disability pension for the first or second degree disability is not the insurance period, the fact that a person receives such pensions shall not give grounds to include this period in the required period for the entitlement to the old-age pension.

When the disability pension beneficiary reaches retirement age and meets the condition of the required insurance period, he/she shall be able to apply for an old-age pension through DSSA. If the calculated old-age pension is higher than the paid disability pension, he/she will be granted the old-age pension. Otherwise, he/she will continue to receive the original amount of the disability pension. Those who receive the disability pension (of all degrees of disability) when they reach 65 years of age, will not forfeit their entitlement to the payments of the disability pension, but CSSA, by law, will automatically transform it into an old-age pension. The payments of the pension will neither be suspended nor its amount would be adjusted, i.e. by reaching 65 years of age, the old-age pension will automatically be paid in the amount of the current disability pension. However, entitlement to this type of old-age pension shall not exclude entitlement to the regular old-age pension that the citizen must apply for.

Professional assistance and any information related to the specific situation of the citizen shall be provided by the DSSA specialists at their place of residence, call centers at 800 050 248 (from abroad +420 257 066 077) or client center at the Prague Headquarters.
