Coordination of pensions in the EU
Each Member States has its own national pension scheme, i.e. there are different conditions for pension entitlements. The aim of the coordination regulations (The European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) No. 883/2004 on the coordination of social security systems and its implementing Regulation (EC) No. 987/2009) is to ensure that migrants are not in a worse position than a person who has always resided and worked only in one Member State.
More information can be found in the English language at Guide for social security within the EU.
The following pension insurance benefits provided by statutory (state) schemes are covered by the coordination regulations:
- old-age pensions
- disability pensions
- survivors' pensions
