Payment of sickness benefits
As of 31.12.2010 DSSA/PSSA/BSSA handled sickness insurance for the employees of approx. 263,200 employers and the number of employees covered was approx. 4.27 million. Compared to 2009 the number of employers was down slightly (by 1.6%) while the number of employees was up (by a little under 3%). There was also an increase in the number of insurance relationships. DSSAs paid out sickness benefits in 2,924,279 cases, an increase of 476,244 from 2009.
The total expenditure on sickness benefits in 2010 was CZK 22.789 billion. With CZK 14.944 billion, sickness benefit accounted for the majority of the expenditure, followed by maternity benefits with CZK 7.410 billion. Attendance allowance accounted for CZK 431 million and compensatory benefits in pregnancy and maternity almost CZK 4 million.
The CSSA registered a total of 1,334,052 completed cases of temporary incapacity to work in 2010, i.e. 191,962 fewer than in 2009 (1,526,014). The average duration of temporary incapacity to work was 46.53 days. That is a fall of a little under two days (i.e. a fall of 3.9%) compared to 2009. The total duration of sickness was 62,078,690 days, which is 11,828,894 fewer sick days than in 2009. Women were more frequently off sick – 682,025 completed cases of sick leave. The figure for men was 652,027. Women were also off sick for a longer time – the average duration for women was 47.70 days, for men 45.32 days.
The most common causes of sickness in 2010 were respiratory illnesses (32%). In total, the CSSA registered 426,490 completed cases of sick leave and 7,254,936 sick days due to respiratory illnesses, with the average case of sick leave lasting 17.01 days.
